Most missing-dog stories end after a few days. This one took nearly a year, involved an entire community, several failed rescue attempts, and, somehow, a side plot featuring coyotes. The story of Ruger, shared by the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region on their Facebook page, reads like the kind of update people can’t believe is real. For months, residents around Colorado Springs kept spotting the same runaway dog, always just out of reach. His family never stopped hoping, though. Then, almost a year after he vanished, the ending everyone wanted finally arrived.
Missing dog returns home after a year on the run and living with a pack of coyotes
If Ruger had any regrets about disappearing for nearly a year, he certainly didn’t mention them. The shelter shared the update in Ruger’s voice, and the runaway dog opened by clearing up a few rumors. No, he isn’t part coyote. No, he didn’t fake his disappearance to “find himself.” And no, he wasn’t attending a wilderness retreat organized by raccoons.
The real story started in May 2025. Ruger was at work at a barber shop with his owner when a customer opened the door. One quick dash later, the dog was gone. His family searched everywhere and then the sightings started rolling in.
People spotted the missing dog around Colorado Springs, especially near Patty Jewett Golf Course. Neighbors and even Golf course employees kept a watch on him. Animal Law Enforcement officers tried more than once to bring him to safety, but every attempt seemed to end the same way. Ruger would appear, somebody would get close, and then he would disappear again.
Months passed, and the sightings kept coming. At one point, residents even reported seeing the missing dog spending time around coyotes. Ruger joked in the post that people were making far too much of a few questionable friendships.
Then, after nearly a year of close calls, a good Samaritan managed to get a leash on him. In true Ruger fashion, he slipped free again while waiting for officers to arrive. Fortunately, his streak ended there. Animal Law Enforcement safely secured him this time, and the missing dog was finally found, minus his coyote friends.
The next day, Ruger went home. After months of worry, thousands of shares, countless tips, and one unforgettable year, his family got their dog back. As for Ruger, he is reportedly adjusting to life indoors again under “approximately 47 layers of supervision.”
