Watching a traumatized pup learn that the world is actually a safe place is a total tearjerker. Over on Instagram, the popular account @hera_the_maligator is sharing a deeply moving update about a sweet Beagle named Elroy. He is one of the rescued pups from Ridglan Farms who only knew how to survive in total isolation. A viral video documents how this sweet rescue dog is slowly leaving his terrifying past behind. His journey from trembling in corners to running in the grass is the perfect uplifting content for your afternoon break.
Rescue dog ‘discovers what it means to be a dog’ after living in fear
The emotional clip opens with Elroy frozen in fear, tightly crouching in a corner next to a toy basket. Text across the screen notes that he spent years simply trying to survive. Early footage shows him sitting inside his crate in his foster home, intentionally turning his back to the open door. He hides in tiny spaces next to the bed frame and crawls under the mattress to avoid looking at anyone.
Beagles are naturally social pack animals, and so making his intense desire to isolate himself is even more heartbreaking to watch. Even outside on a walk, he stands on the grass looking completely overwhelmed.
Healing takes time, and the sweet pup starts processing his new life in tiny moments. While visiting a local park, Elroy stands behind a structure, visibly trembling with anxiety. Thankfully, his new Malinois foster sibling walks over to offer him some comfort. Elroy reaches out to sniff his nose, immediately gaining a shot of confidence from the interaction.
He heads back inside the house and finally relaxes on a real dog bed instead of the floorboards. Soon, he builds up enough courage to run through the park with his pack. The transformation is incredible, pulling in 72.1k likes in just a single day.
Elroy eventually climbs onto the big bed, resting his face directly on his foster sibling Lorenzo’s snout. Fans are completely weeping over the update in the comments, as one said, “We are so proud of you, Elroy. He’s learning what a dog means to humans, too. Who loves & treats them the way they should be treated, not the way he has been”
