Every dog owner knows the morning routine can be a battle. Some dogs race to the door the second they hear the word “walk,” while others need a little encouragement to get moving. One Golden Retriever recently chose a much more creative approach, and the internet couldn’t get enough of it. A hilarious video shared by the Instagram account @maxithecream captured the moment a sleepy Golden Retriever appeared determined to cancel the day’s morning walk by pretending to be fast asleep.

The clip opens with the Golden Retriever curled up comfortably on a dog bed. It shows her face tucked behind her paws as though she’s deep in sleep. According to the owner, the dog had already decided she wasn’t interested in starting the day.

Text on the video explains the situation: the owner wanted to head out for their usual morning walk, but the sleepy retriever had other plans. “She wanted to cancel our morning walk and keep sleeping, and I said no, it is time to get up, so now I have to stand here until she realizes I can see her peeking,” the caption in the video reads.

The post’s caption summed up the situation perfectly: “The psychological warfare of the morning routine. I am not leaving this spot until she breaks character and admits she is awake.” What made the moment so funny was how committed the dog seemed to be. She covered her face with her paws as if she wanted to shut out the world. However, every now and then, she appeared to peek through to see if her owner had stopped trying.

The playful clip attracted plenty of comments from followers who found the dog’s behavior both hilarious and surprisingly convincing. One user wrote, “You have to give a little giggle!” Another commented, “How adorable he is!!!” A third viewer added, “You’re so cute, Maxi. I like sleeping too.” The video was shared by @maxithecream, an Instagram account dedicated to Maxi the Cream Golden Retriever and her owner, Mark De Carvalho.
