Animals that end up in shelters are sometimes unfairly defined by the hardships they have faced. Some people assume rescue dogs are difficult to handle, emotionally distant, or unable to form close bonds with humans. Yet for many owners, adopting a rescue animal becomes proof that love and patience can completely change a life. That message is at the center of a video shared on Instagram by @elliereevess, where a rescue dog named Mouse is seen showering her mom with love.

Rescue dog with a tough past is gentle and bonds with mom just like a little puppy

The video opens with on-screen text reading, “Don’t get a rescue dog, they won’t bond with you the same way a puppy would.” Moments later, the statement is quickly disproven by Mouse’s behavior.

Throughout the clip, the rescue dog stays close to Ellie, gently pawing at her as though asking for attention. Mouse then begins licking her mom’s face and covering her with affectionate kisses. The interaction feels playful and natural, with the dog showing the kind of attachment many people associate with puppies raised from birth in loving homes.

According to Ellie, Mouse has experienced more trauma than most dogs. She explained in the caption that the scars visible on the dog’s face are evidence of the difficult life she endured before being rescued. Despite that history, Ellie said Mouse remains “ridiculously adorable and loving.”

The post also became an opportunity for Ellie to speak about the misconceptions surrounding rescue dogs. She explained that many people unfairly label them as “broken” simply because they have survived neglect.

Ellie shared that she has fostered 13 rescue dogs with additional needs over the years. Some had disabilities, some were recovering from severe trauma, and others came from abusive situations. Still, she said every one of them eventually found a loving home and has become “someone’s family now.”

Through Mouse’s story, Ellie hopes more people will consider adoption instead of immediately turning to breeders. She pointed out that millions of dogs remain in shelters worldwide, many simply waiting for someone willing to give them patience, care, and a second chance.
