The sweet video shows the rescue Pit Bull lying half-asleep on a blanket, looking as if he is finally getting to rest comfortably after a long time — and then his owner calls out, “Potato,” prompting him to wake up and start pacing forward like, “Yes, that’s me.”

In the caption, the owner writes, “After one week, Potato fully knows that his name is Potato now ?,” before admitting the name came with a collection of nicknames — everything from “big Spud” to “aardappel (dutch for Potato).”
It’s a small moment, but it shows how dogs don’t learn names the way humans do. Instead, they learn patterns. When a new name shows up with a gentle voice, attention, food, walks, or just about any source of comfort, it immediately becomes meaningful. And for a rescue dog like Potato settling in, that comfort can mean everything.
